LETTERS, Page 6Adoption Quandary
As an infertile couple, my husband and I have frequently talked
of adopting an older child (LIVING, Oct. 9). Unfortunately,
infertility does not have as one of its side effects the instant
attainment of the financial resources and emotional expertise
needed to parent an abused or emotionally disturbed child. I have
grown increasingly weary of the suggestion that infertile couples
are coldly ignoring available older children while selfishly
wanting to adopt an infant. Every one of us, even those with
healthy fertility, has a responsibility to consider providing a
home for children who have no permanent families.
Elizabeth S. Balsam
Beaumont, Texas
White couples shouldn't be blamed for adopting a child from
another country instead of a black American child. We tried to
adopt in the U.S. and were repeatedly told by social services that
black children and biracial children would not be placed with white
couples. My argument that a white family must surely be better than
no family at all was rebuffed with terms like "racial genocide" and
"lack of native culture." Finally, after two frustrating years, we
adopted a child from India. We have never felt guilty for going "to
the ends of the earth" to find our wonderful daughter.
